Welcome!

Thank you for visiting my 365 blog!

{If you'd like to visit my portrait photography website, click here.}

I'm a mom of 2 kids and have been a photographer for over 4 years. I decided to task myself with doing a 365 {or rather 366} photo project for 2012. I will take a photograph every day, with my "big girl camera". It will mostly be about my life, portrayed artistically. I want to challenge myself creatively and try new things. I'm excited about where this project will take me and I hope you will follow the journey with me!

Mindy + Larry | Spokane Wedding Photographer

I had the pleasure of photographing Mindy and Larry's wedding in Spokane this summer {another late post I realize}.  They got married at the Corbin Mansion on 7th Avenue.  It was my first time photographing an event at the mansion, and it was beautiful, as was the wedding!

Mindy and Larry, prior to this wedding, had a 40 year history together dating back to high school.  The guest book table had a 40-year-old prom photo of them next to a current engagement photo - loved it!  It reminded me of my history.  Even after all these years they were a little shy and nervous {and of course excited} as anyone would be on their wedding day, especially with a camera in their face!  By the way, that vintage corvette is Larry's - he's an avid collector and fixed it up piece by piece.  When I asked if they would sit on the top for a few photos - he flatly said 'no'.  I decided just to roll with it :)

Cheers, Mindy and Larry to another 40 years!

Ella's First Day of School! | Seattle Portrait Photographer for the Modern Family

Well, once again, better late than never.  I took these photos on Ella's first day of kindergarten - and have been meaning to share them with you.  I was a nervous wreck that day but she was soooo excited.  And I'm happy to report she still {2 months later} is excited to go to school every morning.

I got to volunteer in her classroom earlier this week.  If you haven't volunteered in your child's class I strongly encourage you to!  Besides being able to help her teacher Mrs. Koch, I helped the kids during their reading and writing workshops and got to 'observe'.  What fun!  And I have to say, kudos to all you teachers out there.  I don't know how you do it.  There are 22 kids in Ella's class and Mrs. Koch has them engaged in so many educational activities throughout the day - and she keeps them on task!  I don't know how she does it.

Twins Update! - Seattle Modern Child Photography

Here's some new photos of my favorite family with two, yes two, sets of twins!  This session marked the older twins' 4th birthday, and their younger sisters were almost 1-year old in these photos.  So, if you're wondering, YES, they {and we - me and my parental support crew} were extremely busy in this 1.5 hour session.  I was literally sweating afterwards, and even a little sore the next day :)

But it was worth it!  Aren't these photos scrumptious?!

iPhone Friday - Introducing the iPhone 4S

I'm drooling.  Literally.

The iPhone 4S came out today.  Among many of the fabulous upgrades Apple introduced {like the better, faster processor and Siri, the voice recognition system} the phone has an 8 MP camera with an f/2.4 aperture!  What does this mean for you? Higher quality photos period.  Apple boasts that these files can be blown up to a high-quality 8x10 print, and a wide aperture like this allows you to take better photos in low-light situations at a higher shutter speed, thus creating cool moody available light shots while reducing or eliminating blur.  It basically gives you more versatility without having to always resort to using your flash, which I try to avoid at all costs.

Some of the other major upgrades that will help enhance your mobile phone photos are a new, faster A5 processor that will enhance white balance accuracy and reduce shutter lag to zero.

And we haven't even gotten into the new 1080HD video capabilities!

Read here for more benefits of the new iPhone and show me some photos if you are a lucky new owner of one!!  I assure you, once I get one you'll see some of mine.

Happy Shooting!

What to Wear | More Fall Inspiration!

I found more great Fall wardrobe ideas from Wardrobe Wednesdays on Facebook - go check them out!!

Do you see the common theme here is to pick one to two colors and plan the outfits accordingly?  I also see a trend of having a few patterns mixed with different textured materials and solid colors.  It provides interest without clashing.  And as always, layering is a key component {although not shown in these photos}.  They allow us to easily and quickly change the look of a photo {and an individual} by adding or removing layered pieces.  Examples of these are:  scarves, hats, flower headbands or barrettes, denim jackets, vests, or blazers.

I am LOVING the yellow/grey in this example!  Maybe its because I use these colors on my website?

And I love boots!!!  Check out the fun shoes that they've picked.  So fun, interesting, and adds a bit of whimsy.

And last, don't forget the little things - the pieces of flair {I love Office Space}.  Notice the jewelry, watches, headbands?

Unlikely Bird's Nests | Seattle Child Lifestyle Photographer

My sweet, zany kids.  How did bath night turn into this??!  They make me laugh until my belly hurts :)

Chapman Family | Issaquah Portrait Photographer for the Modern Family

Meet the Chapman Family.  You may remember seeing their photos from last year.  I've had the pleasure of working with them for 3 years now, and I adore them!  They have 2 girls who just loved getting their photos taken this session.  We met at the beach just before sunset after a hot, sunny day.  It was packed!  A hot, sunny day in Seattle is just hard to come by, so the entire city flocks to the water on days like this.  I'd say the biggest obstacle for this shoot was composing the photos without any beach combers in the background!  Emma and Lauren loved playing in the sand, going on a long walk, jumping off old logs, finding dandelions, running through the grassy maze-like paths, and cuddling all together on my grandmother's soft quilt.  This is one of those sessions that just came all together.  They are a sweet, happy, loving family who had a lot of fun together that evening despite all the people!

iPhone Friday by Kim Hildebrand Photography | 1197 Mobile Phone & iPhone Conference

For you iPhone and other mobile photo fans out there - the first photo was taken with a mobile phone June 11, 1997.  This October will be the first conference dedicated to mobile and iPhone photography in San Francisco!  You can sign up to attend in person or remotely on this link.  Talks will focus on visual storytelling, photos, techniques, new apps, and much more.  Let me know if you plan on attending!

Until then, check out this iPhone photo of Isaac at soccer practice yesterday.  Just taken with the regular iPhone camera, no other processing involved.  He's getting so fast {and notice the light-up sneakers he's sporting}?!

Happy Shooting,
Kim

iPhone Friday - Seattle Child Photographer for the Modern Family

Wow - I can't believe it's almost October.  I've completely slacked off posting on the blog lately.  For anyone out there reading - sorry :).

I HAD to share this photo {taken with the regular iPhone app and processed with Camera+} with you today.

Since Ella has started kindergarten, we've gotten in the habit of staying after school and playing on the playground.  Usually staying and playing involves a trip to the boy's bathroom for Isaac.  He gets a kick out of the long bank of urinals, and frankly, so do I when little Isaac's the subject!

Enjoy and happy shooting!

iPhone Friday!

I can't believe school is almost in session!  Ella, Tim and I attended Viewridge Elementary's Kindergarten Orientation yesterday and met Ella's new teacher, saw her classroom, and met several of her fellow kindergarten classmates.  I was so excited for her but also had butterflies in my stomach - and this was only orientation.  I can't imagine how I will feel Wednesday on her first day of school.

With this big milestone upon us, we've been scrambling to pack in as many summer activities as we can these last few weeks.  Among the activities, we spent a day with their cousin Britney who lives on the pass.  We had lunch, went on a nice hike/walk around this beautiful pond, and then swam in the condo's heated pool for a good two hours!  Such a great time!

The photo below is one of my favorite landscapes from that trip.  I took it using my most current favored recipe - shot with the regular iPhone camera and processed with Camera+.

Enjoy and happy shooting!

What to Wear | Back to School and Fall Sessions | Seattle Portrait Photographer

I can't believe school is just around the corner!  It probably didn't help that summer just arrived in Seattle about 3 weeks ago.  The end of this summer is bittersweet for me, and marks the start of a huge milestone in our family.  Ella will be starting Kindergarten full-time in two weeks!  I am SO excited for her yet my stomach is churning at the thought.  She's moving from a small preschool to Viewridge Elementary, which will soon have 5 kindergarten classes.  Eek!  I hope she won't be overwhelmed.  I hope she can make friends easily.  I hope she can feel comfortable asking the teacher questions or asking for help.  I hope she can stand up for herself.  I hope she gets it.  I hope she LOVES school!

To help her prep for the occasion, I took her back to school shopping last weekend.  Just her and I.  She had so much fun picking out outfits (and having lunch afterwards of course)!  We went to Gymboree, and I had forgotten how well they coordinate all their colors into mix-and-match outfits that easily go together depending on your tastes.  Gymboree, however, can add up if you don't have gymbucks.  However, I recently went to Fred Meyer and found that they now carry Carter's Mix-and-Match brand clothing that basically offers the same coordinating styles (and its currently 40% off)!

To expand on this further, Wardrobe Wednesdays just posted some great tips for what to wear this Fall.  The key is to pick 2-3 colors and have the kids (and family) coordinate with outfits based on those colors.  See some of the photo examples below, and don't forget to book your fall session soon!  The calendar is already filling up.

iPhone Friday - PicFrame

Hello!

I wanted to share this cool iPhone app I found called PicFrame.  It helps you make a collage of photos right from your phone that you can then save into your photo library or share via email or social networking sites (like Facebook, Twitter, Flickr, or Tumbler).  I've found that its really easy to use and offers quite a bit of versatility.

I love this idea because I think one of the major drawbacks of the iPhone is emailing photos.  I have to email each photo individually versus adding several photo attachments to one email (or maybe I just don't know how to do it!!).  Sure, I can text several at a time but sometimes I need to email them.  This app allows me to tell a story through a cool, polished collage while  being able to fit several photos into one photo file which I can email.

You can make a PicFrame collage using from one to four photos in a variety of configurations.  Once you've picked the frame you like, you can adjust the frame sizes and the corners to your preference.    Then you just click on a photo space and either take a picture or choose a photo within your photo library to add it to the collage.  Once you've picked all the photos, you can again adjust the frames as needed or even go back and pick a new configuration without losing the photos you've already chosen.  Once you're satisfied with the photos and frames, you can change the style of the frames.  They offer a variety of colors, patterns, and textures.  Then all you do is save and/or share with family and friends!

I made the collage below from our day at Silverwood Theme Park in North Idaho yesterday.  It took me 2 minutes this morning - pretty cool, huh?

If you found this post useful or interesting, please share this with family and friends, and send me some love!

Happy Shooting!

Asher - Seattle Child Photographer for the Modern Family

This is Asher.  He's the same age as Isaac, so I felt like we were comfortable and had a lot of fun together - even bonded a little!  He was a trooper as well.  We took many photos inside then went to a nearby park and did more of the same thing.  He hardly needed any bribing at all! :)

I took photos of his little sister, Lily and posted a few of my favorites last week here.  They are both sweet, wonderful kids and I can't wait to see how they grow and change!

iPhone Friday - Day at the Beach

What a beautiful day it is here in Seattle!

The kids and I met some friends at Golden Gardens park.  For some reason I always forget about that beach- maybe because I live in NE Seattle vs. NW Seattle, but it was beautiful.  The sun was shining, there was a nice breeze blowing, plenty of beach real estate despite many other families spending the day there, and we many things to look at and do.  We built sand castles, hunted for treasure, watched the sailboats and cargo ships go by, made stone soup, played cars, explored, skipped rocks, talked to scub-divers, watched kites, and had a picnic and sno-cones.

Anyway, it was a great, relaxing day.  My kids, ages 4 and 6, are getting to the age where they can just hang out all day, follow the rules, and play well together.  I wish it was all the time, but its not.  And that's okay.  For now.  Isn't that just a wonderful moment when you realize, with a deep breath, that everything's just rolling along and you can sit down in the sand and enjoy some company with your friends?

So for today's post, I thought I would share a few photos from today's beach excursion.  I used my two favorite iPhone apps once again:  the regular camera plus Camera+.

Enjoy your weekend and happy shooting!

Miss Lily - 1 year - Seattle Child Photographer

This is Lily - one of the sweetest 1-year-olds I've had the pleasure of photographing.  You can just tell how sweet and fun she is by looking at the photos below.  I'll post some photos of her big brother soon.

Happy Birthday Lily!!

Emma's 3rd Birthday! - Redmond Child & Family Photographer

This is Emma.  She turned 3 in May (yes, I'm behind in my posts again).  I had the pleasure of photographing her birthday as well as some child and family portraits outside.  I got many more smiles out of her when she didn't have the stress of her birthday party to deal with - that's exactly how Isaac would have been too!

Emma is so full of life - I really had fun photographing her and her family!

Happy Birthday Emma!

iPhone Friday - Road Trip Photo

So I'm a road trip photo junkie.  I LOVE taking photos while flying down the freeway at 75mph.  Maybe part of it is because as a kid raised in the 70s and 80s from Idaho, our family drove everywhere.  And you have to drive a long ways to get to see different parts of the country when you're from North Idaho!  We never flew by airplane.  I spent countless hours trying to keep myself busy in the car (this is pre-DVD player, mind you--I don't know how my parents survived!!) and a lot of the time I would just check out the scenery unfolding in front of my eyes.  I grew to appreciate watching how the topography would gradually change from a mountainous, forested landscape to a dry high-plain with scrub brush.  I loved watching the weather and remember driving through a few killer thunderstorms in the Dakotas and Nebraska.  I liked slowing down through small towns and seeing what restaurants and business they had and what was busy.  These are the places I'd see hot dogs, coffee, and fishing lures all on the same sign.  And there was always the wonder of approaching a big city.  Watching the freeway go from 2 lanes to 5 or 6, seeing all the lights and hi-rises off in the distance, and witnessing my parents trying to navigate through it with their large maps spread out on their laps.

This summer we're headed back to Coeur d'Alene a few times and I plan on taking quite a few photos on the road.  I took this photo below last week (while Tim was driving) on our way back to Seattle.  This is on I-90 on the bridge going over the Columbia river.  I took it with the iPhone camera and processed it once again with my trusty Camera+ app.

If you have similar camera photos you've taken while on the road, post them to my Facebook Page.  I'd love to see your favorites!

Happy Shooting!

iPhone Friday - iPhone Camera and Camera+

We've been in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho enjoying the lake and 4th of July festivities.  I grew up here and loved spending countless hours downtown and at the beach.  It never gets old coming back here - besides visiting family and friends,  the beautiful lake and quaint downtown with its exceptional 4th of July festivities can't be beat.  I love being able to share this with the kids so they can make their own memories of this beautiful place!

Here are two iPhone photos I've taken on this trip - one of Ella catching bugs in her Uncle Scott and Aunt Tami's back field, and a second of a beautiful sunset from our cabin on the lake.  Both are just taken with the regular camera app and enhanced with the Camera+ app I've discussed before.  Hope you enjoy!!

iPhone Friday - Hipstamatic Favorite

I thought it appropriate to share this iPhone photo today- one of my favorite flag photos taken last Fall when we went on vacation to Guemes Island.

We stayed at this quaint house on the beach literally 2 blocks away from the ferry terminal.  We went there with good family friends of ours who have two kids of similar age.  The place had a huge front lawn and beach that the kids loved!  Right at the edge of the lawn, the owners had set up 2 adirondack chairs next to this huge flag pole.  We were there in early October and the weather was fantastic!  I remember spending the whole weekend outside enjoying the sun, ocean breeze, and the beautiful view.  The flag was proudly flapping in the breeze and when I look at this photo it reminds me of Guemes Island.  If you're ever looking for a great spot for a getaway, Guemes is it!

Happy 4th!

New Photo of Isaac- Seattle child portraits for the Modern Family

My kids are growing up so fast!  I know, its so cliche' to say that but I bet every parent feels this way.  Isaac will be turning 4 in October and he just learned to ride his bike without training wheels last week.  I just can't believe how much both kids are learning and doing right now!

I thought it would be fun to post a new photo of him three different ways:  SOOC (straight out of the camera), edited, and edited in black and white.  Which version do you like the best??
